The Label It Yourself (#LIY) campaign is a decentralized, autonomous grassroots campaign born out of our broken food system. We have been asking our government to label food products so we can make educated decisions about what we eat. The government has ignored our requests and so we are taking matters into our own hands.

Get your labels at www.labelityourself.org or create our own!

Not vegan or animal rights related necessarily, but genetic engineering should be important to all of us! If you haven’t read much on GMO’s, please take a few minutes to do so and educate yourself on this pressing matter. Just something to think about!  Spread the word!

#USDA Offers the Biotech Industry Blanket Immunity for Contaminating Organic Crops #ActionAlert #GMO

USDA calls it “coexistence,” but it’s just a way for GMO farmers to harm whomever they like—without consequence. Action Alert!

Many countries across the globe ban genetically engineered crops and foods. The USDA, rather than banning GMOs, aggressively supports them and claims that GMO crops will coexist alongside non-GMO crops.

The USDA’s Advisory Committee on Biotechnology and 21st Century Agriculture (AC21) was formed in 2003 but met infrequently after 2008. USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack recently revived it; the committee plans to meet three or four times a year from now on, and ANH-USA attended the August 27–28 meeting. The committee is composed of members from the biotechnology industry, the organic food industry, the seed industry, the food manufacturing industry, and consumer and community development groups.

Whether you’re skeptical about the excessive use of Monsanto’s controversial pesticide, Roundup; outraged over the company’s history of suing farmers that have either saved seeds or been victim to crop drift from nearby farms growing genetically modified seeds that Monsanto holds patents on; or perhaps you’re just not convinced that enough evidence exists to support the ubiquity with which genetically modified foods proliferate in this country—whatever your reason—you can avoid funding Monsanto by steering clear of the following Seminis seeds. Opt instead for heirlooms and seeds from suppliers that have signed the Safe Seed Pledge. Then, save your own.

Monsanto Threatens to Sue Vermont if Legislators Pass a Bill Requiring GMO Food to Be Labeled

April 4, 2012  |  By Will Allen and Ronnie Cummins | via @CyranoNymous

The world’s most hated corporation is at it again, this time in Vermont.

Despite overwhelming public support and support from a clear majority of Vermont’s Agriculture Committee, Vermont legislators are dragging their feet on a proposed GMO labeling bill. Why? Because Monsanto has threatened to sue the state if the bill passes.

The popular legislative bill requiring mandatory labels on genetically engineered food (H-722) is languishing in the Vermont House Agriculture Committee, with only four weeks left until the legislature adjourns for the year. Despite thousands of emails and calls from constituents who overwhelmingly support mandatory labeling, despite the fact that a majority (6 to 5) of Agriculture Committee members support passage of the measure, Vermont legislators are holding up the labeling bill and refusing to take a vote.

Instead, they’re calling for more public hearings on April 12, in the apparent hope that they can run out the clock until the legislative session ends in early May.

What happened to the formerly staunch legislative champions of Vermont’s “right to know” bill? They lost their nerve and abandoned their principles after Monsanto representative recently threatened a public official that the biotech giant would sue Vermont if they dared to pass the bill.

New study: #Monsanto’s toxins kill human kidney cells

By Jeremy Bloom, March 14, 2012

science vs monsantoHow safe are Monsanto’s  genetically-modified (GMO) food crops?

Not so much. A new study shows that both of Monsanto’s major products (which the company claims are harmless to people) in fact can cause damage to human kidney cells.

29th February 2012, By Jack Adam Weber

This is an open (hearted) letter to the approximately 270,000 farmers challenging Monsanto’s patents on genetically modified seed, who today, after suffering through months of deliberation, tediousness and preparation, had their case against Monsanto dismissed by Judge Naomi Buchwald in Federal District Court in Manhattan. The details are here.

We want to send this letter from all of us to the farmers. Please sign on here to join as one voice, one heart.

New Vermont #GMO Labeling Policy Officially Introduced

By Dr. Mercola | February 29 2012

Vermont has recently introduced bill H.722, requiring labeling of foods containing genetically engineered ingredients. Such products would also be prohibited from using advertising or promotional material that states or implies that the food is “natural”. If passed, the bill will take effect in 2014

Other US states pushing for mandatory labeling of genetically modified (GM) foods include California, Michigan and Washington

Mandatory labeling of GM foods is becoming even more important to counteract laws that prevent anti-GMO efforts. So far, 14 US states have passed laws to protect the unabated expansion of GM seed use. Pending legislation in Michigan now also seeks to prohibit local governments from passing ordinances that impede or prohibit the use of GM seeds of all kinds.
